Woodsprite Orchids was founded in March of 2001 as an outgrowth of more than thirty years of privately collecting and growing a multitude of species and hybrids of tropical orchids.

     The greenhouse is filled with a wonderful variety of orchids from seedlings to blooming size plants. Our current selection includes species, hybrids and mericloned plants of Cattleyas, Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums, Oncidiums, Intergenerics, Paphiopedilums, Phalaenopsis, Phragmipediums and many others.      The original structure of approximately 500 square feet was doubled within the first year of business in order to house the incoming variety of compots, seedlings and mature specimens. During the expansion of the main greenhouse, we also began the conversion of an existing structure into a wheel chair accessible sales area and showroom. To properly showcase plants that are in bloom, we added a south facing 280 square foot lean-to style greenhouse to this structure as well. Upon completion, the showroom will also be used to display and sell orchid related materials, books and potting supplies. Renovations should be completed by end of summer 2002.

     Flasks, compots and seedlings are always coming in from a multitude of different sources. The selection process of plant material is driven with an emphasis on plants that can easily be grown in the home and which are suitable for cultivation at windowsills, in sun rooms or under artificial lights. To this end we have added a substantial selection of mini and compact plants all the while maintaining a sufficient supply of the so called "standard" forms of many genera. This influx of plant material will insure that there is a constant supply of unique items for all to choose from. We always purchase plants for every type of orchid grower; those that are considered "easy" for the beginning orchid enthusiast and the more challenging specimens for the experienced growers, taking pride on being able to acquire the more unusual and exotic items that will make a welcome addition to even the most extensive private collection.

     Woodsprite Orchids is open year round and the blooms in the greenhouse are a welcomed sight when all other flowering plants are asleep under the heavy Maine winter snows.

     The goals of the company are:

• To provide a wide variety of healthy and robust plants for the orchid collector.
• To seek out unusual varieties to help the collector round out his or her collection.
• To become a conduit of information on the care and nurturing of these plants.

     Customers are always welcome just to stop in and casually browse our vast selection or simply to take a break from their day: Seeing all of our plants in bloom is alone well worth the trip! When and if you’ve selected an orchid and are ready to purchase, we’ll carefully pack your new plant for a safe ride home.

     "Woodsprite Orchids" was chosen as the name of the nursery because of its location. Our residence and greenhouses are nestled in the countryside of New Gloucester, Maine which is enveloped by groves of ancient pine trees that give the setting a feeling of sylvan enchantment. One has a sense that benevolent spirits or "wood sprites" inhabit these blue-hazed sanctuaries protecting the surrounding flora and fauna from evil and harm.
